A Wedding in Rodrigues: The Secret Alternative for Couples Who Want Even More

A Wedding in Rodrigues: The Secret Alternative for Couples Who Want Even More Authenticity Than Mauritius
The Island That Even Mauritius Considers Its Secret Garden
There is Mauritius. And then, 650 kilometres to the east, lost in the Indian Ocean like a thought nobody has finished forming, there is Rodrigues.
If you have never heard the name, that is normal. Rodrigues does not advertise. It has no aggressive tourism office, no Instagram campaign, no celebrities posing in swimwear on its beaches. It is the absolute antithesis of mass tourism — and that is exactly what makes it the most surprising, most moving, and most radically different wedding destination you will find in the Indian Ocean.
Rodrigues is an autonomous island of the Republic of Mauritius. Four kilometres wide. Eighteen kilometres long. Forty-three thousand inhabitants. Seventy-eight kilometres of wild coastline, deserted coves, and wind-battered cliffs. A lagoon twice the size of the island itself — an immense turquoise mirror dotted with coral reefs and uninhabited islets.
This is Mauritius before tourism. Mauritius fifty years ago. Mauritius in its purest, rawest, truest form.
And for couples seeking something nobody else has experienced, it is a treasure.
What Rodrigues Offers (And What It Does Not)
Let us be clear from the start. Rodrigues is not for everyone. And that is a good thing — it is what preserves its magic.
What you will find:
Deserted beaches. Not "relatively quiet." Deserted. Sweeping stretches of sand where you can walk for an hour without seeing a soul. Saint-François beach, Trou d'Argent beach (accessible only on foot via a trail through the vegetation), Anse Mourouk — names Google has never heard, and places that speak directly to the soul.
An intact Creole culture. Rodrigues lives to the rhythm of a Creole that is older, slower, more musical than Mauritius's. The rodriguan séga — more spontaneous, more earthy, danced barefoot on the sand — has nothing in common with the choreographed resort shows. Here it erupts naturally, at village festivals, family gatherings, Saturday evenings.
Authentic cuisine. Fish grilled the morning it was caught. Octopus dried in the sun then cooked in curry. Green papaya achards. Rodrigues honey, renowned across the Indian Ocean. Candied lemons. Simple, intense, direct cuisine — a mirror of the island itself.
A sense of community. In Rodrigues, everyone knows everyone. The fisherman who takes you out in his pirogue knows the cousin of the guesthouse owner. The woman who runs the herbal tea shop watched the hiking guide grow up. Getting married here means being welcomed not by a hotel, but by an entire island.
What you will not find:
Five-star resorts. Rodrigues's hotel scene is modest. A few small boutique hotels, family guesthouses, lodges with lagoon views. No spa with infinity pool. No butler service. No marble lobby.
A wedding industry. There is no "Rodrigues wedding planner" with a website and packages. Organising a wedding here requires initiative, creativity, and the acceptance that things will happen a little differently — a little more slowly, a little more manually, a little more humanly.
Conventional luxury. If your vision of the perfect wedding includes Dom Pérignon champagne and floral arrangements worthy of a Parisian palace, Rodrigues will disappoint you. But if your vision includes barefoot toes on sand that nobody else has touched, a grilled octopus dinner over a wood fire as your wedding meal, and a sunset you will be the only ones watching — then Rodrigues will overwhelm you.
How to Get There
Rodrigues is accessible by air from Mauritius. Air Mauritius operates daily flights between Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport in Mauritius and Sir Gaëtan Duval Airport in Rodrigues. The flight takes about an hour and thirty minutes.
There is also a ferry service — the MV Mauritius Trochetia — which connects Port Louis to Port Mathurin (the capital of Rodrigues) in about thirty-six hours. It is a crossing from another time, an adventure in itself, but not for fragile stomachs or tight schedules.
For a wedding, we recommend the flight. The island being small, you will not need any transfers once you are there — distances are counted in minutes, not hours.
The Legal Wedding in Rodrigues: What You Need to Know
Rodrigues is part of the Republic of Mauritius. The marriage laws are therefore the same — same documents, same procedures, same legal recognition.
The civil registry office in Port Mathurin can celebrate your civil marriage. The officer will travel to your ceremony venue, just as in Mauritius. The required documents are identical — apostilled birth certificates, Certificate of Capacity to Marry for French nationals, passports, oath of allegiance.
The difference is the scale. In Port Mathurin, you will not be a file among many. You will probably be the only wedding of the week, perhaps of the month. The civil registry officer will have time to talk to you, to smile, perhaps even to share a drink after the ceremony. It is administrative intimacy at its warmest.
The same preliminary formalities apply — sending documents at least one month in advance, oath of allegiance, publication of banns. Simply allow a little more margin in the communication timelines, because the Rodriguan pace is, by nature and by choice, more measured.
Ceremony Venues in Rodrigues
There is no official list. There is no directory of recommended sites. There is simply an entire island offering itself as your backdrop.
Trou d'Argent. Often cited as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Indian Ocean, accessible only on foot via a trail through dense vegetation. When you emerge onto this cove, framed by cliffs covered in greenery, with a sea of almost unreal blue — the breath catches in your throat. It is a place of romantic pilgrimage, not a tourist spot.
Île aux Cocos. Four kilometres west of Rodrigues, this small island is a nature reserve where thousands of seabirds nest. Accessible by boat, it offers a white sand beach lined with coconut palms and casuarinas. Access is controlled to protect the ecosystem — which means your ceremony will necessarily be intimate, respectful, and in harmony with a preserved environment.
The hills of Port Mathurin. The capital of Rodrigues — if you can call a charming village of five thousand souls a capital — is perched on hills offering panoramic views of the lagoon. A ceremony on one of these ridges, with the lagoon stretching to the horizon and the wind carrying your words toward the sea, has something epic in its simplicity.
The caves of Caverne Patate. For the most adventurous couples — an underground ceremony in a network of limestone caves adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. It is unusual, it is spectacular, and it is the kind of wild idea that becomes the best stories to tell.
The Ideal Format: The Rodriguan Elopement
If Rodrigues had a natural wedding format, it would be the elopement.
Two people. An island. No constraints.
You arrive. You drop your bags in a guesthouse facing the lagoon. You spend your first days exploring — cliff hikes, pirogue trips, grilled fish dinners with your feet in the sand. You breathe in the island's rhythm. You slow down.
And then one morning, or one evening, at the moment you choose, you stand facing the ocean and you say the words. An officiant — perhaps a local priest, perhaps a friend who came from France, perhaps yourselves if the ceremony is symbolic. Two witnesses — perhaps the owners of your guesthouse, who became friends in a few days, as always happens in Rodrigues.
The photographs are taken barefoot, hair in the wind, with the only makeup being the tan of the sun and the only decoration being wildflowers picked that morning.
It is the simplest wedding in the world. And often the most beautiful.
Your Guests' Experience (If You Bring Any)
If you choose to bring a small group to Rodrigues, prepare to give them a trip they will never forget.
Not because of the luxury. Because of the opposite of luxury — radical authenticity.
Your guests will fish with local fishermen. They will taste honey straight from the beekeeper. They will dance the séga barefoot at a village festival nobody had invited them to but where everyone welcomes them. They will discover that happiness does not need air conditioning, high-speed WiFi, or a minibar.
And when they go home, they will not only talk about your wedding. They will talk about Rodrigues. About this island they had never heard of and which became, in a few days, one of the most precious memories of their lives.
Rodrigues Is Not for Every Couple. It Is for the Right Ones.
We do not write these words to be elitist. We write them because they are true.
Rodrigues is not an easy wedding venue. There is no coordinator with a clipboard and a Plan B for every scenario. There is no air-conditioned conference room in case of rain. There is no florist who can reproduce a Pinterest arrangement identically.
But there is something money cannot buy and the most perfect planning cannot fabricate: truth.
Rodrigues is true. Wildly, tenderly, irreducibly true.
And if your love is of the same kind — the kind that does not need scenery to shine, that prefers wind to glitter, that finds beauty in simplicity and grandeur in humility — then Rodrigues is not just an option.
It is your island.
Nat & Jude are ready to cross the ocean with you — even to Rodrigues.
