The Ideal Timeline for Planning Your Mauritius Wedding: Month by Month, From 18 Months Out to the Day

Because the Best Stories Start With Good Timing

There is a beautiful paradox in planning a destination wedding. On one hand, you chose Mauritius precisely to escape rigidity — to trade the walls of a château for the ocean horizon, to replace protocol with a warm breeze. On the other, for that freedom to become real, it takes the precision of a watchmaker.

Don't panic. It's not as intimidating as it looks.

What you're holding in your hands — or rather, under your eyes — is the calendar we wish we could have given to every couple we've photographed in sixteen years. Not a theoretical calendar. A calendar forged by experience. By the weddings that went off without a hitch, and by the ones where a forgotten detail nearly derailed everything.

Follow it. Adapt it to your own pace. And above all, check off each step with the satisfaction of knowing you are exactly where you need to be.

18 Months Out: The Dream Takes Shape

It's early, yes. But this is where it all begins — in calm, without urgency, with the luxury of time.

Choose your season. The southern winter (June to September) offers dry, mild weather, reduced prices, and photographer's light. The high season (October to December) is spectacular but pricier and more in demand. Avoid January through March — that's cyclone season and peak humidity.

Decide on the format. Civil ceremony in Mauritius, symbolic ceremony after a civil one back in France, or both on the same day? This decision shapes everything else — especially the administrative timelines.

Start researching venues. Hotels, private villas, public beaches, colonial estates — each option has its advantages and its constraints. The most sought-after venues in high season book up a year in advance, sometimes more.

Set your preliminary budget. Even approximate. Even on a napkin. Knowing whether you're planning an intimate affair for two or a celebration for fifty changes the equation radically.

15 Months Out: The Foundations

Book your ceremony and/or reception venue. This is the first concrete expense, and the most structuring. Everything else — caterer, photographer, florist — revolves around the venue.

Hire a local wedding planner (if you want one). For a destination wedding, it's an investment that pays for itself ten times over. Someone on the ground who knows the vendors, the pitfalls, the alternatives, and who will speak Creole with the florist when you can't.

Book your photographer. We put this early in the timeline for an obvious reason — good photographers book well in advance, especially in high season. But beyond availability, booking early allows you to build a relationship, share your vision, and prepare something together that feels like you.

12 Months Out: The Paperwork Begins

If you're opting for a civil ceremony in Mauritius:

This is the time to contact the French Embassy in Mauritius to request your Certificat de Capacité à Mariage (CCAM). The lead time can be up to six months — starting at 12 months out gives you a comfortable margin.

Gather the necessary documents: full copy of your birth certificate (less than three months old), ID, proof of address, list of witnesses, and if applicable, the certificate of your marriage contract if you drew one up with a notary.

If you're opting for a civil ceremony in France + symbolic in Mauritius:

Start the process with your local French town hall. Timelines vary by commune, but count two to three months to compile the file and publish the banns.

In either case:

Get your birth certificates apostilled. The apostille is issued by the Court of Appeal in your place of birth. Allow a few weeks.

10 Months Out: The Guests

Send your save-the-dates. For a destination wedding, ten months in advance is the minimum. Your guests need to request time off work, book flights, and potentially save for the trip. The earlier you let them know, the more will be able to come.

Create a wedding website. It's become essential for destination weddings. Practical information about Mauritius, hotel suggestions at different budgets, travel tips, the week's programme. A central hub that saves you fifty individual WhatsApp messages.

Negotiate group rates with hotels near your venue. Most Mauritius resorts offer fifteen to twenty-five percent discounts for eight rooms or more.

8 Months Out: The Key Vendors

Choose your caterer. If your reception venue is a hotel, the caterer is often included — which simplifies things. If you're going with a private villa or estate, you'll have your pick of the island's independent caterers. Ask for tasting menus. Explore Creole cuisine — your guests didn't cross an ocean to eat salmon.

Book your officiant (for a symbolic ceremony). Professional master of ceremonies, close friend, or family member — decide who will speak the words that matter.

Choose your florist. Mauritius is bursting with spectacular tropical flowers — frangipani, hibiscus, orchids, anthurium. A good local florist will transform your ceremony into a living painting for a fraction of the European price.

Book the DJ or live band. Good Mauritian musicians are in demand — sega, jazz, acoustic. Book early.

6 Months Out: The Details Take Shape

Send the official invitations. With all the logistical information: recommended flights, accommodation, tropical dress code, the week's programme.

Order your dress or suit. Six months allows for alterations, fittings, and above all, the time to find exactly what suits the tropical climate — light fabrics, fluid cuts, breathable materials.

Send your documents to the Mauritian authorities. The Bureau Central de l'État Civil in Port Louis must receive your file at least one month before the wedding, but anticipating at six months protects you from any surprise. Your wedding planner or hotel can handle this shipment for you.

Book your flights. For you and for your guest group. Air France and Air Mauritius operate direct flights from Paris — about eleven hours of flight time. Booking six months ahead gets you the best fares.

4 Months Out: The Fine-Tuning

Confirm the menu with your caterer. Finalise the choices, incorporate your guests' allergies and dietary requirements, validate the number of covers.

Plan the décor. Tables, arches, lighting, petal-strewn aisle — work with your florist and wedding planner to create a cohesive atmosphere.

Organise activities for your guests. Catamaran, diving, hiking at Le Morne, a visit to Chamarel, a day at Île aux Cerfs — an activities programme transforms a wedding into an unforgettable collective trip.

Start writing your vows. If you've opted for a symbolic ceremony, now is the time to begin writing. Not the night before. Not on the plane. Now. The most important words of your life deserve time to mature.

2 Months Out: The Countdown

Reconfirm every vendor. An email, a call, a check. Venue, caterer, photographer, florist, officiant, DJ, transport. Leave nothing to chance.

Request new birth certificates if the originals are nearing their expiry date (three months for Mauritius, three months for France). This is the classic trap we see every year — couples whose documents expire between the time of application and the wedding day.

Finalise the seating plan (if applicable). Factor in your guests' jet lag on the day of the reception — conversations will be livelier at some hours than others.

Try on your final outfit. With the shoes (or without shoes, if you're going barefoot on the sand). With the makeup. With the hairstyle. Test everything.

1 Month Out: The Home Stretch

Send the detailed programme to your guests. Day by day, hour by hour. Who needs to be where, and when. The wedding planner's number. The addresses. The dress codes.

Pack your wedding bag. The dress or suit in carry-on (invest in a rigid garment bag). The rings in your handbag — never in checked luggage. Original documents with you, not in a suitcase in the hold.

Confirm airport transfers for you and your guests.

3 Days Out: You're in Mauritius

Administrative day in Port Louis (if civil ceremony). Document verification, oath at the Supreme Court, publication of banns. Your coordinator accompanies you.

Ceremony rehearsal. With your officiant, your photographer, and the key people.

Positioning, timing, the run of the show — a thirty-minute rehearsal prevents hours of stress on the day itself.

Enjoy it. Go to dinner with your feet in the sand. Swim in the lagoon at sunset. Look out at the Indian Ocean and let the emotion rise. You're here. Everything is ready. Everything is in place.

The Day Itself: The Beginning of Everything

You have nothing left to organise. Nothing left to check. Nothing left to fear.

Your wedding planner handles the details. Your photographer is in position. The florist has transformed your venue into a waking dream. The caterer is preparing a feast. The music waits.

All that's left for you to do is what you came for: to be present. Together. Barefoot if you want. Eyes locked on each other. With the ocean applauding behind you and the Mauritian sun gilding this moment as if it knew — and it does know — that this light, nobody will ever forget it.

Say yes.

The rest is already written.
