East Coast Mauritius Wedding: Why Belle Mare and Palmar Are in a Class of Their Own

There are parts of Mauritius that are beautiful. And then there is the east coast.

We have photographed on every corner of this island the dramatic basalt cliffs of the south, the busy northern beaches, the sunset light at Le Morne over the lagoon. We love all of it. But when couples ask us where the most extraordinary light is, where the water is most impossibly clear, where you can stand barefoot on sand so white it feels invented we tell them to go east.

Belle Mare and the Palmar coastline are, in our considered opinion, the most photogenic stretch of shoreline in Mauritius. We have photographed over a hundred weddings in this area and we have never once been bored by it. The light, the water, the quality of the air it is different here, and the difference matters.

What Makes the East Coast Different

The east coast of Mauritius faces the open Indian Ocean with the Tropic of Capricorn running just south of the island. The water here is protected by one of the longest coral reef systems in the world, which means the lagoon the stretch of ocean between the beach and the reef is shallow, still, and a shade of blue-green that does not photograph the way reality renders it. Even experienced photographers are surprised, every time, by the colour.

The beach at Belle Mare is long several kilometres of uninterrupted white sand and wide enough that even in the most popular months it never feels crowded. There are stretches of it, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon, where you can stand and see nothing in either direction but sand, water, and sky. No hotels visible. No sunbeds. Just the horizon and the sound of the reef.

Palmar, a few kilometres south, is slightly wilder. The vegetation comes closer to the water here, and the beach curves in a way that creates a natural intimacy you feel held by it rather than exposed. It is a favourite location for ceremonies that want to feel truly private, truly away from the world.

The Light on the East Coast

Photographers have a saying: the east coast light is generous.

What this means in practice is that the morning light on the east coast is front-lit and golden from around seven until ten, which is extraordinary for getting-ready photographs and early ceremony moments. By the time the ceremony hour approaches typically late afternoon the sun is moving toward the west, which means it falls behind you and in front of your photographer, creating that warm, rim-lit quality that makes photographs look like paintings.

The sunset itself, on the east coast, is not the one you see on the horizon the sun sets in the west. But what happens on the east coast at golden hour is, arguably, more beautiful: the sky to the east turns a luminous blush-and-gold, the water catches every last photon and turns the lagoon into something molten and soft, and the light is so warm and flattering that every single photograph taken in that window looks extraordinary.

We have never left an east coast shoot at golden hour without at least one image we consider among the best we have ever taken.

Ceremony Locations We Love on the East Coast

We will not give you a list. What we will do is tell you what to look for.

The best ceremony locations on the east coast share certain qualities: they have the lagoon in the frame, they offer some natural shelter from the southeast trade winds that blow consistently on this coast, and they are either genuinely private or can be made private for the duration of your ceremony. The trade wind is actually your friend it keeps the temperature perfect and prevents the heavy humidity that can make outdoor ceremonies uncomfortable on other parts of the island.

Some of the hotels along this coastline have ceremony spaces that are beautifully positioned on the beach, with the water as your backdrop and the coral sand beneath your feet. Private villas can offer something even more intimate a ceremony that happens entirely within a private property, where the garden meets the beach and the beach meets the lagoon and there is no one else for kilometres.

The area between Belle Mare and Palmar also has some quietly extraordinary inland locations riverbeds fringed with pandanus trees, gardens where bougainvillea comes in walls of colour, old plantation estates where the light filters through centuries-old trees. If you want something other than the beach though we understand why you would not the east coast has it.

Accommodation on the East Coast

The east coast is home to some of Mauritius's finest hotels names you will recognise if you have researched the island at all. Several of these properties have dedicated wedding services and ceremony spaces that are genuinely beautiful. But our recommendation, for couples who want full privacy and the best possible conditions for their photographs, is a private villa.

The villa market on the east coast is exceptional. There are properties here that have their own beach access, their own gardens, their own pools that run up to the lagoon edge. A villa wedding on the east coast gives you the ceremony, the reception, the getting-ready suite, and the photography locations all within one private space and the intimacy of that setting produces photographs that hotel-based weddings simply cannot replicate.

Planning Your East Coast Wedding

The east coast is accessible from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in about forty-five minutes to an hour depending on traffic it is, in fact, the closest coastal area to the airport, which simplifies arrival logistics considerably.

For ceremony timing, we recommend late afternoon between four and five-thirty p.m. in the austral winter, or slightly later in the summer months. This puts your ceremony and couple portraits in the best possible light. If you are planning a lunch or brunch wedding, early morning from seven to nine is also extraordinary the light is cooler and cleaner, the beach is empty, and there is a quality of freshness to the morning air that is deeply Mauritius.

Whatever you choose, come to the east coast at least once before your wedding day. Walk the beach you have chosen. Feel the sand under your feet. Watch where the light falls at the time you will be there. Let the place become real to you before it becomes the backdrop to the most important day of your life.

It will not disappoint you.
