10 Ceremony Locations in Mauritius You Won't Find in Any Guidebook
Because the best backdrops don't appear in any brochure.
We're going to tell you something.
When a couple asks us "what is the most beautiful place to get married in Mauritius?" we never answer with the name of a hotel. We ask a question back: "What makes you feel alive?"
Because the most beautiful ceremony location isn't the one with the most beautiful lighting designed by an interior architect. It's the one that takes your breath away. The one that makes you forget there is a photographer, an officiant, a seating plan. The one that brings you back to what matters: two people, a moment, a place that seems to have been created for exactly this instant.
In sixteen years of photographing weddings in Mauritius, we have discovered places that the brochures ignore, that the tour operators don't mention, and that even some Mauritians only half-know about. Places that don't appear on any hotel package — but that produce the most stunning images in our portfolios.
Here they are. Keep them close.
1. The Sugar Cane Fields at Sunset
Mauritius is covered in sugar cane. It accounts for roughly 90 percent of the island's cultivated land.
But few couples think of these fields as ceremony backdrops — and that is precisely what makes them a treasure.
At sunset, when the low light cuts through the stalks, the entire field ignites into a golden ocean. The cane sometimes stands two to three metres tall, creating a natural corridor that isolates the couple from the rest of the world. The wind makes the stalks undulate in a rustling sound that resembles silent applause.
The image of a bride in white walking between the golden rows of sugar cane, with a sky on fire behind her, is one of the most powerful we have ever captured. And it costs nothing — you simply need to ask the field owner for permission, which is often granted with a smile and amused curiosity.
The best fields for photography are found in the plains of the south and west — between Chamarel and Bel Ombre, or on the heights between Tamarin and Black River, where the view stretches all the way to the sea.
2. Île aux Bénitiers
Anchored in the lagoon of the west coast, facing Le Morne, Île aux Bénitiers is a ribbon of white sand a kilometre and a half long, bordered by casuarina trees and accessible only by boat.
It is an island within an island. A place that demands effort to reach — the pirogue crossing is part of the journey — and rewards that effort with absolute solitude. No road, no car, no noise of civilisation. Just the sand, the shallow water of the lagoon, and the imposing silhouette of Le Morne Brabant rising behind.
For an elopement or an intimate ceremony, Île aux Bénitiers is a natural theatre of striking purity. Feet in the water, sand that glitters, silence broken only by the lap of waves — it is the kind of place you dream about without knowing it actually exists.
The logistics require a bit of coordination — boat transport, on-site setup, retrieval — but a local wedding planner handles this without difficulty.
3. The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, Off the Beaten Path
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere, founded in 1770. Its giant Victoria amazonica water lilies are famous worldwide. But what the tourist guides don't tell you is that there are corners of this garden — secondary paths lined with century-old palms, hidden pools, pergolas overtaken by vines — that offer a ceremony setting of quiet majesty.
Holding a ceremony here requires special permission, and that is precisely what makes the experience exclusive. The talipot palm avenues, which flower only once in their lifetime before dying, create a natural metaphor of almost painful beauty — the idea that some moments are so rare, so unique, that they deserve to be lived with absolute intensity.
4. The Tamarin Salt Pans
At sunset, the Tamarin salt pans become a giant mirror set upon the earth. The shallow basins reflect the sky in shades of pink, orange, and violet, creating a landscape that seems to belong to another continent — somewhere between the Camargue and the Salar de Uyuni.
This is a working place, not a tourist site. The salt harvesters — often Mauritian women wearing straw hats — perpetuate an artisanal tradition that stretches back centuries. Their quiet presence adds an authenticity that no staging could reproduce.
A couple's photo session in the salt pans at dusk produces images of rare poetry — silhouettes reflected in the brine, white salt pyramids punctuating the horizon, light that transforms every surface into gold.
5. The Ebony Forest of Chamarel
Mauritius once harboured vast ebony forests — a precious wood that made the island's fortune and its misery for centuries. Today, fragments of this forest survive, particularly in the Chamarel nature reserve, where century-old ebony trees raise their dark trunks toward the canopy.
Speaking your vows beneath the cover of an ebony forest is to marry in a place that has weathered centuries. The light filtering through the foliage creates a play of shadows and bright patches that gives photographs an almost cinematic quality — like a film shot inside a cathedral of living wood.
Access is via the hiking trails of the reserve. The atmosphere is cool, silent, enveloping. The contrast with the beach is total — and that is exactly the point.
6. Flat Island: The Edge of the World off the North Coast
Eleven kilometres offshore from Cap Malheureux, Flat Island is a deserted island officially classified as a nature reserve. Accessible only by catamaran or speed boat, it offers white sand beaches of absurd purity, crystal-clear waters, and a solitude that even the private islands of luxury resorts cannot match.
Marrying on Flat Island is marrying at the edge of the world. Not figuratively — literally. There is nothing here. No building. No electricity. No phone signal. Just you, the sand, and the ocean stretching in every direction like a promise of infinity.
The logistics are heavier — everything must be brought by boat and carried away afterward — but the result is an experience that no hotel, however luxurious, can come close to matching in intensity.
7. The Suspension Bridge at Yemen Nature Reserve
In the wild interior of Black River, the Yemen park (attached to the Casela domain) houses a suspension bridge that spans a lush gorge dozens of metres above a river. It is a place of adventure — but also a place of theatrical beauty.
Imagine your vows spoken on a suspension bridge above the void, surrounded by tropical greenery, with the sound of water below as your only musical accompaniment. It is bold, it is different, it is the kind of memory that cannot be confused with any other.
This place is obviously not for everyone — you need to love heights, adventure, and accept that the wind will do whatever it wants with your veil. But for couples who seek adrenaline as much as emotion, it is an incomparable backdrop.
8. Cap Malheureux and Its Red-Roofed Church
The little church of Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice at Cap Malheureux, with its bright red roof silhouetted against the blue of the sea and the green of the casuarinas, is one of the most iconic images of Mauritius. But what the tourists taking selfies in front of it don't know is that it is possible to celebrate a real religious marriage here.
The church is tiny — barely a few dozen seats — which makes it perfect for an intimate ceremony. The view from the forecourt, over the lagoon with the island of Coin de Mire in the background, has a serenity that instantly calms any pre-ceremony nerves.
The process for a religious marriage in Mauritius goes through the diocese of Port Louis, and a certificate of marriage preparation from your home diocese is generally required. The process demands advance planning, but the result — a marriage in this historic church facing one of the most beautiful panoramas of the north — is worth every effort.
9. The Ruins of Balaclava
On the northwest coast, the ruins of an 18th-century sugar estate emerge from the tropical vegetation like a setting from a novel. Stone walls overtaken by vines, arches that frame the sky, staircases that lead nowhere — all bathed in light that filters through the foliage.
This is not an official ceremony location, but for a photo session or an intimate symbolic ceremony, the Balaclava ruins offer a setting of rare romantic power. The contrast between ancient stone and nature reclaiming it tells a story of resilience and beauty that outlasts time — a perfect metaphor for marriage.
Some of the ruins are located near or within hotel properties, which makes access easier.
10. The Summit of Le Pouce at Sunrise
Le Pouce is the third-highest peak in Mauritius — 812 metres — and one of the most accessible hikes on the island. In an hour and a half of walking from the village of Saint-Pierre, you reach a summit that offers a 360-degree view of the entire island.
Now, imagine this: you set out in the dark. You climb by the glow of headlamps. And at the moment the sun rises above the ocean, flooding Mauritius with the first light of day, you are there, at the summit, and you say yes.
This is the most daring wedding on this list. The most physical. The most demanding. But also, possibly, the most unforgettable. Because the shared effort — the climb in the dark, the shortness of breath, the other hand pulling you upward — is the purest metaphor for what a couple is: two people climbing together toward something beautiful.
The photographs taken at sunrise from the summit of Le Pouce are, without exaggeration, among the most extraordinary we have ever created.
The Perfect Location Is Not the One You're Searching For
We have learned one thing in sixteen years.
The couples who choose a location because it is "the most beautiful on Instagram" are rarely the ones who live the most intense moments. The couples who choose a location because it makes them feel something — even something they cannot name — are the ones whose photographs give us chills.
Mauritius is an island small enough to cross in a day, and rich enough to offer a different place to every couple who visits. Your place exists somewhere on this island. Perhaps in this list. Perhaps elsewhere — in a place that even we have not yet discovered.
The important thing is not to find the perfect place. It is to find your place. The one that resonates with your story. The one that, when you arrive, makes you forget the entire world.
And when you find it, we will be there to turn it into an eternal memory.
